On Friday 15th February, funders and supporters of Croydon’s £6.5million Legacy Youth Zone were given an exclusive tour to see the progress on site, ahead of the official opening this summer.
Just months away from completion, funders and young people were delighted to see the incredible progress being made on site of the new Youth Zone, it was an opportunity to see the layout and scale of the offer and brought the Youth Zone project to life.
Set to open in Selhurst this summer, Legacy Youth Zone will provide young people aged 8- 19 (and 25 for those with additional needs), with a safe and inspiring place to enjoy over 20 activities per night at a cost of £5 per year and only 50p per visit.
The Youth Zone will include an indoor climbing wall, 3G kick pitch, sports hall, training kitchen, martial arts studio, fully equipped gym, dance and drama studio, health and well-being room, enterprise and employability suite and much more.
Members of the Legacy Young People’s Development Group were on hand to meet and greet funders, as well as share insights into their journey with the Youth Zone so far – many of whom have played a vital role in naming the Youth Zone, designing hoardings, assisting with interviewing staff and acting as ambassadors for the Youth Zone.
Legacy Youth Zone is being delivered in partnership by OnSide Youth Zones, Croydon Council and a number of organisations and businesses, united in their aim to support young people to lead healthier, happier, more aspirational lives.
The £1.4million annual running costs are supported by the charity’s family of Founder Patrons, made up of local businesses and philanthropists united in their support of young people and their ambition to see Croydon flourish. The charity is seeking further support from organisations who share its aim to provide Croydon’s young people with somewhere to go, something to do and someone to talk to.
Legacy will become part of the OnSide Youth Zones network which currently welcomes over 40,000 young people per year to Youth Zones across the country in; Bolton, Carlisle, Manchester, Blackburn, Oldham, Wigan, Wolverhampton, Wirral, Chorley and Warrington.
Barnabas Shelbourne, Chief Executive of Legacy Youth Zone said: “It has been a wonderful opportunity to show the Legacy Youth Zone development to the funders and supporters who made it happen. Their generous support will allow us to make a tremendous difference to the lives of young people and the entire community in Croydon.
