We’d love to show you around a local Youth Zone, allowing you to see for yourself the impact that these centres make. Simply fill in your details below and a member of the team will be in touch to arrange a visit.
Take a Virtual TourGame Changers – a group of young people from across the OnSide Youth Zones network who serve as the figureheads of our future Youth Zones recently look part in ‘StreetGames’. The residential trip in London gave the young people the opportunity to visit key sights in the capital whilst take part in a wide range of fun and inclusive activities building confidence, self-esteem and networking with other young people from across the network.
Ijaz was one of the young people who took part in the residential and in his own words, shares his highlights with us:
StreetGames (21st – 24th July 2017)
Ooosh! What is it all about?
StreetGames is about making sport widely available for disadvantaged young people and communities that can change their lives and help them learn new skills for the workplace and education and at the same time help the young people socialise and make new friends.
We took part in activities which involved a lot of inflatables, night walks through the forest, archery, zip wire and played games at a camp fire.
Over the weekend, we stayed in tents with 2 or 3 people. We ended up with a few aches and pains, but it was worth it, because it brought people together, mixing with people that you would not usually mix with.
One highlight was attending the para-athletics at the Queen Elizabeth 2nd Stadium, were we watched the athletes earn their gold medals.
Another highlight for me was watching a Portuguese runner who ran the 5000 metres. He was that fast he overtook all the other runners – I decided to give him the name ‘Sonic’.
My biggest learning from the residential was:
‘When you think there is something not right, don’t stay silent just ask and challenge it in the right way.’
I really enjoyed camping and would like to camp again. I’d like to use what I learnt about camping during the StreetGames residential to help others experience how fun camping can be.
Over Summer I am really looking forward to going on another residential with my fellow Game Changers and Youth Zone Ambassadors.
