I learned how to paddle, listen and follow instructions. This was one of the best experiences I have ever taken part of and I am grateful to OnSide for giving me this opportunity.
We’d love to show you around a local Youth Zone, allowing you to see for yourself the impact that these centres make. Simply fill in your details below and a member of the team will be in touch to arrange a visit.
Take a Virtual TourWith good weather and excitement, seven members of the Ambassadors for London went on a day trip to Lee Valley White Water Rafting venue located just outside the M25 for a day filled with learning, team building, wetsuits and a lot of fun!
Upon arrival, the group gathered to where they were given a briefing from the instructors on the basics and things to remember whilst in the water and in the rafts. They were taught how to make use of the oars, sitting positions and what to do if anyone fell into the water and how to navigate in turbulence. Once taught, the group were ready to mount the boat and commence stage one of practice, which involved learning how to balance and follow instructions. They began their journey towards the zone where they would learn how to assist a teammate back into the boat, how to swim away from the boat as well as the test of swimming which meant that they had to jump into the rushing waters, swim towards the bank and climb out.

After the few stages of training, the group was then ready to take on the waves and enjoy white water rafting. Thankfully with the good weather, they all took full advantage of the day and really enjoyed it.
The session focused on team building and how to white water raft which was an amazing experience and with smiles all around, they didn’t want to leave the water!
I learned how to paddle in different ways and how to control our falls into the water, I mostly enjoyed surfing the waves and learning how to water raft.
Ben Bracken – Legacy Youth ZoneI’m not very good at swimming but going to Lee Valley to experience White Water Rafting, made me confident in myself and it made me feel like I could overcome things I wouldn’t of before. My difficulty was swimming and most times I thought I was going to fall out of the raft. The experience was great and it helps with confidence and teamwork. As a team we tried to make sure everyone knew what they were doing and had good communication left, right and center but overall it was a great day!
