What inspired you to join OnSide?

I’ve spent most of my career working with organisations that support young people, so OnSide’s focus on providing opportunities really appealed to me. What drew me in was the ambition behind the work and the quality of what’s offered. I was already sold on the mission, but the values interview during my interview process stood out. It gave me a real sense of how important the culture is at OnSide, which made me even more excited to join.

What’s been a memorable moment you’ve had working with the team?

In being out and about around Youth Zones and as part of my job in comms, I’ve been lucky to meet lots of young people and hear about their stories and journeys. It’s always really impactful to hear what they’ve achieved when given opportunities and the backing of someone who believes in them. It’s definitely a highlight of the job.

This was especially true when I first visited The Hive Youth Zone. I had young people approaching me, totally unprompted, to tell me why their favourite room, activity, or youth worker was so amazing. It was evident how much their Youth Zone meant to them!

What was the first Youth Zone you visited and what did you think?

The first Youth Zone I visited was Legacy Youth Zone, a month or two after I joined, once COVID restrictions were lifted. It’s true that you don’t truly ‘get it’ until you walk through the doors, see the scale of the space, and feel the energy. Seeing a Youth Zone come to life during a session is amazing – the energy and the connection between the youth workers and the young people is truly impactful.

What would be your go-to Youth Zone room and why?

I think I’d gravitate towards the music room, since I played some instruments growing up. I’d also like to spend time in the media room as well, since I enjoy video editing and working on creative projects.
