I was excited to join a charity that was growing, ambitious and creating a real impact with thousands of young people every year.
Having to dance with the Leader of a Council whilst on a Youth Zone tour in my first few weeks of OnSide, in front of my line manager, the CEO of a Youth Zone and a few others, when I categorically do not dance, EVER!
Wigan Youth Zone was my first and I couldn’t get over how big it was. The rooms kept going on and on. It felt like every possible activity for young people had been thought of and planned out with real care.
Probably the art room for a bit of quiet time, doing something creative.
When I was 21, I was hired to manage a new bar about to open in Leeds city centre, which quickly turned out to be one of the most popular bars in town. With a staff team of 30-40 (mostly uni students), annual income of around £2m and open until 2am most nights, it was a steep learning curve!
