Take a Virtual TourI wanted to work for an organisation that had a meaningful and positive impact on society. I had young children at the time and recognised a real lack of opportunity for young people to grow and connect with others in a safe environment outside of home or school. OnSide’s mission immediately appealed to me, and the chance to work for a growing and ambitious charity where I could have an impact on how things develop was too good an opportunity to pass up!
The first Youth Zone I was involved in was the opening of The Hive. My job was setting up systems and back-office processes – which often involves a lot of invisible, thankless work! But on the night when the Youth Zone first opened its doors to young people, I was completely overwhelmed. Seeing their faces light up as they rushed in and explored this brand-new state-of-the-art building… it blew me away. In that moment, all the hard work was more than worth it. It was a powerful reminder of why we do what we do and is a feeling I have kept with me ever since.
Manchester Youth Zone was the first one I visited. I went there while I was still working my notice at my previous job, and I’ll admit, I still was unsure whether I was doing the right thing! But any concerns I had vanished the moment I stepped inside. Seeing the young people absorbed in activities, speaking to the team and feeling the passion they had for their work, instantly reassured me that I had come to the right place.
