What inspired you to join OnSide?

I wanted to join OnSide because of its impact and potential to effect change for young people, at scale. The organisation was starting something seismic with a model that’s sustainable, that really works, and that brings opportunities to young people who don’t have them. This really appealed to me in this day and age, it shouldn’t be that where you are born/the situation you are born into still determines your life outcomes, but that’s largely still the case, and it’s a trend that is becoming starker. I was excited that OnSide has a way of tackling this, boosting social mobility and levelling the playing field for young people so more get the chance to thrive, irrespective of background or circumstances.

What’s been a memorable moment you’ve had working with the team?

My most memorable moments are hearing young people explain in their own words what their Youth Zone and Youth Workers mean to them. An amazing young person called Jasmine from The Hive Youth Zone did exactly this at an event we organised for potential funders. She was brilliant and articulated the impact of a Youth Zone beautifully, saying that she’s learnt from Youth Workers that the future isn’t something that should be feared”. This really stuck with me

What was the first Youth Zone you visited and what did you think?

I visited Wigan Youth Zone first during my interview process. I was blown away by the quality of facility, the variety of activities and the constant presence of youth workers.

What would be your go-to Youth Zone room and why?

Climbing wall and boxing gym I’m always up for trying a new sport and I would have absolutely loved to have a go at both these when I was Youth Zone-aged.
